Ouirgane sits in a wide, sheltered basin on the northern edge of Toubkal National Park, where the road from Marrakech finally leaves the plain behind. Red earth, olive terraces and juniper slopes surround the dam, whose water turns turquoise in spring.
It is the nearest village with a handful of cafés, small shops and a salt-house tradition that goes back generations. Most guests pass through it on the way up to us — it is worth stopping.
What to see
The dam walk
A flat two-hour loop along the water with the Toubkal massif behind it. Best in the late afternoon when the light turns the far bank copper.
The salt pans
Family-run evaporation basins still worked by hand, just outside the village. Ask before photographing — these are working plots, not a site.
